Premium vs Protection: How to Choose Health Insurance Wisely
Your ₹10 lakh health insurance may NOT mean a ₹10 lakh claim payout.
This is one of the biggest misunderstandings I see around health insurance.
People often compare policies like this:
₹10 lakh cover + ₹15,000 premium
and assume the higher cover automatically means better protection.
But the real question is:
“How much of that cover can actually be used when I need it?”
Because health insurance comes with conditions.
And those conditions matter most when you're in a hospital—not when you're buying the policy.
Here are 7 things you should check:
1️⃣ Waiting Periods
A new policy generally has an initial waiting period for illnesses.
Pre-existing diseases and certain specified treatments can also have waiting periods.
Don't wait until hospitalisation to discover this.
2️⃣ Exclusions
The policy doesn't cover everything.
Certain treatments, procedures and expenses may be excluded depending on the policy.
That's why:
Policy wording > Sales pitch
3️⃣ Room Rent Limits
Your policy may restrict the room category you're eligible for.
Choosing a room above the eligible limit can affect the amount payable under some policies.
A cheaper policy can sometimes come with expensive restrictions.
4️⃣ Co-payment & Deductibles
Even when a treatment is covered, you may still have to pay part of the bill.
Don't look only at:
“How much does the insurer cover?”
Also ask:
“How much could I have to pay?”
5️⃣ Sub-limits
Some policies may have specific limits for particular treatments or expenses.
So ₹10 lakh sum insured doesn't necessarily mean ₹10 lakh available without conditions for every treatment.
6️⃣ Maternity & OPD
Don't assume these are automatically included.
Maternity, OPD, home care, alternative treatments and other benefits can vary significantly between policies.
Always check the actual terms.
7️⃣ Renewal & Long-Term Protection
Health insurance isn't just about today's coverage.
It's also about maintaining protection over time.
Under current IRDAI rules, insurers generally cannot refuse renewal simply because you made a claim in an earlier policy year.
Long-term continuity also provides important protection around contestability, subject to the applicable rules and fraud exceptions.
So before buying or renewing health insurance, don't ask only:
❌ “How much is the sum insured?”
Ask:
- ✅ What are the waiting periods?
- ✅ What is excluded?
- ✅ Is there a room-rent limit?
- ✅ Is there co-payment?
- ✅ Are there deductibles?
- ✅ Are there disease-specific sub-limits?
- ✅ What treatments and benefits are actually covered?
Because the headline number isn't the whole policy.
₹10 lakh coverage is only useful if you understand the conditions attached to that ₹10 lakh.
And that's why I believe:
Premium ≠ Protection
Sum Insured ≠ Actual Claim Experience
The fine print matters.
